The Dutch Masters Story

Launched in 1912 by the GH Johnson Cigar Company, Dutch Masters is one of the longest standing machine-made cigar brands still thriving today. Within just a few years, GH Johnson merged with several other companies to form Consolidated Cigar Corp in 1918. They would be known as a tobacco powerhouse that would later become Altadis U.S.A, the maker of well-known brands like Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta.

The brand’s name and iconic imagery are inspired by Dutch Renaissance painters, most notably Rembrandt. Every box feature “The Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild,” a painting depicting five men examining fine cloth. Things really took off in the 1950s when the brand found an unlikely ambassador in Ernie Kovacs, a cigar-chomping television innovator with a flair for the absurd.
