Continental Europe is not the place you’d go looking for cigar tobacco. The Emissary France features filler tobacco grown in the Mugron River Valley, situated between Bordeaux and the Spanish border. It’s a unique growing region, nurtured by Atlantic air, mild temperatures, and mineral-packed soil.
The Emissary line is Macanudo’s ongoing experiment in using European-grown tobacco, and so far, this one is a hit. The Espana introduced Spain-grown tobacco from Riolobos. Now the France line picks up where that one left off. They’ve incorporated aged tobacco from multiple countries while letting the European leaf shine through. The cigars are rolled at STG Danli in Honduras, an experienced factory that’s handled plenty of premium lines.
The beautiful ten-year-aged Ecuadorian Habano is draped over a 10-year-aged U.S. Broadleaf binder. The filler is a five-country blend featuring the standout four-year-aged French leaf from Bordeaux. Complementing is a 10-year-aged Dominican Piloto, seven-year-aged Brazilian Arapiraca, and eight-year-aged American Broadleaf.
This mix of fillers delivers a rich and complex experience from the start. Expect some barnyard on the wrapper with nuttiness and dark chocolate. As it gets going, you’ll get salt from the Bordeaux leaf complemented by dried fruit, and floral notes weaving in and out.
The Emissary France comes in four sizes, all in 16-count boxes. These include the Robusto 5x52, Toro 6x52, Churchill 7x48, and the Perfecto 5.75x50. Each cigar is wrapped in a rustic reddish-brown leaf with a slightly toothy texture that holds up well throughout the experience. Like its previous line, the construction on this one is sturdy, the draw even, and the experience is medium in body.
For cigar smokers looking for something off the beaten path without blowing the budget, Macanudo Emissary France fits the bill. It’s not every day you get to try French-grown filler, especially this well-aged and well-built. If you’re curious what French terroir brings to the table, this is your chance.
