Robusto I’ve smoked cigars for 3 decades. Kristoff used to be one of my favorites (my son’s too), though I haven’t had one is some time, maybe a year. So I bought a box of 20 original maduros just recently, and in two words my review is “extremely disappointing. ” I recall the Kristoff of years ago, coming unwrapped in boxes filled with tobacco leaves. They had a certain earthy aroma right out of the box, and they were a quality, satisfying smoke. These characteristics were missing this time. My first stick had an extreme tunneling problem causing the cigar to burn terribly unevenly. It required constant relighting, was very unsatisfying, and I was forced to give up on this one well before I normally would. So maybe this was just a fluke? Several days later I had my second stick. Now, I always take my time lighting my cigar, rolling it around to get the complete cigar lit. But I had difficulty getting the circumference to ignite well even though it was a nice calm evening, no wind. Once I had a good light it immediately started to burn unevenly causing me to relight several times to get an even burn. This problem persisted through the first third of the cigar. As I smoked, the ash was a flaky black & gray, not at all like a firm white ash of several premium cigars I now smoke, e. g. Aging Room Nicaraguan Quattro, Oliva V Melanio, or even JR Ultimate Principales Oscuro. The second third of the cigar was a bit better, but still required some relighting to keep an even burn. As for smoking satisfaction, it was just OK…. not the deeply satisfying smoke I remember of the Kristoff of former times. I usually smoke my cigars down to close to the nub, but in this case I gave it up with about a quarter cigar left. For my third stick, I removed the cellophane wrapper 2 days before smoking this stick. The results were better this time, but still required several relightings to keep the burn even. As far as smoking satisfaction, it was just OK. In summary, I debated rating this cigar as a 2 star or 3 star. I’d like to say 2 ½, but this isn’t possible in JR’s review process. Based on my “bad burning” experience and that I really didn’t enjoy these cigars as I expected to, I’ll have to go with 2 stars. My judgment is that something has changed with the original Kristoff Maduro, certainly in its construction, and I would not recommend it. My box of 20 came with a bargain price of $143 but that is no consolation for the cigars delivered versus my expectation. 2 5 1
