Montecristo DR No. 2 This cigar tastes pretty good but burn terribly. Many burn down one side and you can't even light the non burning side. After a third of the cigar is smoked they come apart. Montecristo DR No. 2 I have smoked the JR Alternative Montecristo DR No. 2 for at least 4 years and maybe 5. When I first started they had a nice aroma a nice tobacco flavor and not much in the way of nicotine and NO Pepper. Yesterday I completed a short series from 1 of the 2 last bundles I received. I call it a series because suddenly a month ago I noticed pepper in the blend. I also noticed that the flavor had pretty much disappeared along with the aroma. I believe that this blend has changed and pepper has been added. I noticed in the last smoke that the aroma started to come in about half way through but the flavor (if even still there) is completely obscured by the pepper. I am disappointed that such a flagship (as this cigar was in my mind) has changed in such a negative way. I am rethinking my stock since I believe this cigar is now a lost cause. 2 5 1
Montecristo DR No. 2 Today I lit up side by side the JR Alternative MC #2 and a 'real' Montecristo #2. I wanted to see for myself how these two cigars compared. Both cigars had a very good draw. the JR Alt had a slightly darker wrapper. the smoke output was nearly identical in both cigars. The 'real' MC #2 had a noticeable white pepper to the flavor while the JR Alt was more smooth and floral. The burn of the ash was nearly identical in color all the way through. I had to retouch the real MC #2 twice due to the wrapper burning slightly wonky no retouch was needed on the JR Alt. The JR Alt did burn slightly faster than the real MC #2 but I am sure this is because of the mixed filler. The real MC#2 also had a few slight flavor shifts with the white pepper going in and out back to the more floral notes while the JR Alt had no flavor shifts and was consistent with the floral notes all the way to the end For me the difference in price is just not there for the extra 5 minutes of smoking time the real MC #2 offered. For this cigar the JR Alt won out and I will buy again. 4 5 1

Montecristo DR No. 2 This is my first cigar not counting the dried-out Cuban my uncle gave me that I smoked in five minutes. It seemed to be constructed very well and the draw was perfect. Montecristo DR No. 2 This was my first JR Alternative that came with the my b.y.o sampler (I totally suggest getting a sampler it's worth it!) This stick had awesome construction even burn and stayed lit. Ash was very light and flaked but stayed consistent. The first and second portion was creamy and sweet. Very light and mellow body. The end of the cigar had a cashew/almond taste. It wasn't too complex and it wasn't too simple! I like it! 👍 4 5 1

Montecristo DR No. 2 I've spent 10x the price on other cigars that were not this well constructed. Thus far they are consistent in construction and flavor. These are a little too peppery to be a Cuban Monte and a little bit stronger. The flavor not as well rounded but I didn't expect it to be. It's a good cigar. For the price.... it's a great cigar. -Draw was perfect. Not tight but didn't feel hollow - that said I'm only sensitive about tight draws. -Construction was great. Thus far better than most. I'd only give a 5-star to Bolivar and (believe it or not) Roma Craft. -Flavor was good. I was not expecting a well rounded cuban flavor but I was hoping it was a little more creamy and not as peppery, instead this was the opposite but it has a good flavor. -Consistency is great thus far. 4 5 1

Montecristo DR No. 2 I have been smoking the JRMX2 for years and with much pleasure, however this last shipment was NOT the same! It was a different shape, different colored wrapper and harsh to smoke. I tried to smoke several to make sure I would give it a fair chance. Each one was the same … harsh and the wrapper on each, unraveled immediately! What happened! After several phone calls to JR, all customer service stated the same; "There was no new suppliers" on these cigars. I made a photo copy of both the old and new, side by side, and it clearly shows the difference! I included this photo, with a letter to customer service, and the 2 remaining bundles and was told I would get a credit. These clearly are NOT the same cigars I have been smoking for years! Montecristo DR No. 2 I ordered a 20-pack of these on the clever marketing tactic of JR Cigars linking these to Montecristo #2s. Anyone who has had the pleasure of smoking Montecristo #2s knows them simply as among the finest cigars in the world; smoking one is indeed one of the finest pleasures in the world, as you experience a journey through both tasting notes and the feeling in the gut and in the head that Cuban cigars are known for. Comparing these JR pyramids to Montecristo #2s is a bit of a misnomer. The JR construction of these pyramids is sketchy, these cigars are rough around the edges, and they would never pass for Habanos export quality. A humidor sommelier would reject 50-75% of these on a generous day. Smoking one in their current state is at first a curious thing, then quickly becomes a burden, and the last 1/4 of the cigar you simply want to let die a natural death on the ashtray. The flavor profile is relatively mild, and besides the inconsistencies during the burn, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy or interesting. So if these don’t compare to a Montecristo, how can they be judged? To me, you judge these as $3 handmade cigars, and by that metric, these are a great value. Take them out of the cellophane, remove the labels, and place them in a cedar-based humidor, and after proper aging—say 7-10 months—you’ll have the best value cigar possible. I plan to age mine for several years. After that amount of time, the moisture should help with the construction shortfalls, and the flavor profile should become more uniform and elegant. My rating of 3 stars is based on their potential after aging, and as value in the forefront. But be warned: even with aging, you won’t be able to turn these flank steaks into filet mignon, which is to say you’ll never think you’re smoking a Montecristo #2. But for $3 a pop, that’s hardly the bar to cross. Can you think of a better way to spend $3? I can’t. 3 5 1

I was pleasantly surprised with that. The cigars were a little dry perhaps that is part of getting them shipped. I have since put them in humidor and they smoke fine. Good cigars for the price. Only drawbacks: Had to relight a couple of times had correction issues & the ash was all over the place. I still enjoyed it because the flavor was nice which is always my first priority. 3 5 1

They're so good that if I took the label off of them and handed them to somebody that mother only knew their cigars they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this and a Monte Cristo. Sticks were uniformly firm but slightly dry nothing a little rest in the humidor did't correct. Draw and burn very good with cigar lasting aprox 45 mins to an hour light grey firm ash. Taste could have used a little more (mild to medium) but very pleasant hints of sweetness coffee leather ceder and earth. Humidor definitely has a spot for them reserved. 4 5 1

Montecristo DR No. 2 I'm a little disappointed. Read so many great reviews that my expectations were high. I smoked about 5 already and they are not rolled too tightly. The draw is actually too easy and the cigars burn hot. I'm going through one in 20-25 minutes. I'm going to try and leave them in the humidor a little longer. The taste is not very complex. Montecristo DR No. 2 I've tried a few a couple alternative cigars from J& R and this one is ky favorite so far. The cigar is tasty smooth burning and the drag is excellent. It is my favorite alternative so far. I've purchased close to 200 of these cigars and have no complaints. I have smoked hundreds of brands over the past 40 years and continue to try new ones but the JR Alternative Monticristo No. 2 DR remains the very best...regardless of cost or cigar rating! Interesting I've had other cigar smokers (strangers) stop me on the street in different cities to ask me if it is a Monticristo because of the shape and smell. Bought a 20-bundle of these JR Alternatives Mild Cigars not really knowing what to expect. I should of lit one up on the premises because they were remarkable and I've would have walked back in and bought up their shelf stock of these. At the JR store a 2 bundle purchase would have gotten me 10 free cigars too. I've just placed a 3 bundle order but online it appears they don't have the enticing freebie offer. Bummer... Montecristo DR No. 2 I have smoked a full bundle of the JR Edicion Limitada Alternative Cohiba Behike Laguito No. 6 over the past 10 months. Pretty much all of them smoked great with only a few of them canoeing about at the mid way point. Also at the mid way point the cigar seems to want to go out, but a few hard puffs and it reignites. I kept my last bundle in a humidor and they were always moist. The second bundle I just received seem to be a bit dryer. I wonder if keeping them in my humidor will moisten them up like to last bundle I had. I will follow up with a review when I have smoked this next bundle. I do not consider myself a cigar expert, but I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to smoke plenty of genuine Cohiba's. This cigar seems fairly similar to a Cohiba to me, and at approx. $3 each, it had been worth. 4 5 1

Montecristo DR No. 2 I don’t have much money and can’t afford the brand-name cigars that I really enjoy. This is a great alternative. Not too strong, and very well-made. It’s the first thing I’ve ordered from JR. I’m exploring other cigars now, but will definitely come back and order this again. The flavor doesn’t have any sweetness or creaminess to it. It’s pepper and tobacco. Not bad. Sometimes they don’t burn evenly at the beginning, but then they even out about a third of the way down into the cigar. If the flavor were better, and they burned more evenly I would give it five out of five stars. Still a great smoke. I don’t drink alcohol, goes great with coffee. 4 5 1

One would have a flavor profile similar to a Monte Cristo and the next would have a very acidic and bitter flavor. They remind me of smoking cheap off brand cigarettes you get at a seedy gas station.
