Juan Lopez Cigars Background
The story of Juan Lopez begins in Havana in 1876. That was when entrepreneur Juan Lopez Diaz expanded his business into the cigar trade. Like many Cuban pioneers of the era, he focused on hand-rolling cigars using long-filler leaves from the island’s Vuelta Abajo region. The tobacco grown there is so prized it became the foundation of other well-known Cuban cigars.
Following the Cuban revolution, the government nationalized the tobacco industry, placing Juan Lopez under the Habanos S.A. portfolio, where it still exists today. While it’s more or less considered a local brand, its Cuban cigars have seen limited releases outside the island. Known among collectors for its old-school flavor, this cigar line would eventually catch life outside of Cuba.
The right for American production were first registered in the 1970s and later acquired by Altadis, which relaunched its own Nicaraguan-made version back in 2013. While it received high praise, many people still don’t know much about the brand. That’s where this project comes in. This Dominican-made line aims to bring Juan Lopez cigars to the spotlight. It’s returning to bring its old-world authentic appeal that made it popular in the first place, all while being remade for the modern smoker.
Juan Lopez Cigar Blend and Construction
The new Juan Lopez is made with an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper and an Ecuadorian Habano binder. At the center is a core of Dominican Piloto Cubano, Corojo, and HVA (Habano Vuelta Abajo). The HVA tobacco is a Cuban-seed varietal grown in the Dominican Republic and prized for its spellbinding sweetness and aromatic pull. Together, this combination creates a medium-bodied experience with flavors of nuttiness, leather, and tobacco sweetness.
Juan Lopez Cigar Lineup
The new Juan Lopez line is available in the same size as the original cigars launched over a century ago. These include the Campanas 5.5x52, the Maximos 6x48, and the Seleccion Especial 6.75x52. Production takes place at Tabacalera La Isla and is made in partnership with Hostos Fernandez. The master craftsmanship is in full display in every cigar. You can enjoy this collection in boxes of 11 or packs of 4.
