Although he acted throughout his school years, he didn’t recognize acting as a viable path. When he finally finished school, he was at a loss for direction, so he picked up a job at his sister’s beauty salon.

After eighteen months of working at the salon, DeVito decided to explore cosmetics and applied for makeup classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Applicants to this school were required to perform a monologue to get on the program. DeVito was given great feedback and decided to pick up acting classes. After this, he realized acting was his true calling.

After graduating in 1966, he worked at a theater center in Waterford, Connecticut. While there, he noticed an advertisement of Hollywood auditions for Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood (1967) and moved to Los Angeles.

DeVito initially struggled to land parts in LA, and eventually moved back to New York. It was here he earned roles in a few off-Broadway plays.

Eventually, Danny was cast on-screen  as Louise De Palma, a taxi dispatcher, in the sitcom Taxi (1978). This role caught the attention of many, and DeVito has since had a very long and successful acting career.
