Davidoff Yamasa Cigar Review

Davidoff Cigars, although too rich for my blood to be smoked on a daily basis, offers a luxurious cigar smoking experience that’s well suited for the most special of occasions. Quite honestly, I’ve never met a Davidoff cigar that I didn’t immensely enjoy, but somehow the Davidoff Yamasa cigars remained under my radar, so I chose it for this review;  namely, the 6 x 52 Toro, my favorite size.

The Blend

Named for the region where the tobacco is grown, the cigar employs wrapper and binder tobaccos from the Yamasa region of the Dominican Republic. Thanks to Master Blender Henke Kelner and his team of agricultural scientists,  this unforgiving swampland with an ideal growing climate and mineral-rich soil was transformed into a successful tobacco-growing field.  This groundbreaking recipe also includes aged Nicaraguan long-filler leaves from Condega and Estelí— two of the top growing regions in the country.

Appearence

As one would expect from a Davidoff creation,  Its shade-grown Yamasa wrapper is virtually flawless, with very tight seams and a nice oily patina. The cigar feels solid in the hand with no soft spots or divots detected, and it looks much fatter than its 6 x 52 size.

Davidoff Yamasa Cigar Review

First Third

After toasting the foot and lighting the cigar with a torch flame, the first few puffs produce an abundance of black pepper. By the third and fourth draw, flavors of wood, leather, and cocoa join the fray and provide a rich medium to full-bodied experience that already has me hooked!

Second Third

Aromas and flavors of espresso,  sweet cream, oak, and earth mingle together in a delightful balance, while the black pepper is only dominant, this time on the retro-hale.

Final Third

This is the point where all of these warm and inviting flavors that include wood, leather, cocoa espresso, cream, and white pepper on the backend,  harmoniously meld together to offer a complexity that’s second to none.  Overall, this was a long-lasting smoke with a fabulous sweet tobacco aroma. The burn remained flawless right down to the nub, it held long gray ash firmly, and only a couple of minor touch-ups were required.

Final Thoughts

  • This is a cigar I would recommend to both the well- seasoned enthusiast and the novice alike as the super-smooth medium to full-bodied flavors are never overpowering and can easily be enjoyed by every style of smoker.

  • Yamasa, like most other Davidoff cigars, comes with a premium price tag, but like the age-old adage says, “you really get what you pay for”. Bottom line; It’s a luxury-class cigar that every serious smoker should experience, even if it’s on a limited basis.

  • This is one of those proverbial cigars that I would choose to smoke If I was limited to a handful of premium brands. And, with an impressive 90-rating from Cigar Afficionado, I’m certainly not alone in offering Davidoff Yamasa such high praise!
