Top Cameroon Wrapped Cigars

While it doesn’t play a huge part in the overall construction, the wrapper is, in my opinion, the most important part of the cigar.  First, it is the most visible and therefore needs to be flawless to the eye in order to attract a consumer.  This makes the cultivation of wrapper particularly difficult.  It is also responsible for a majority of the flavor, while most of the strength comes from the filler and binder.  This means that an overwhelming majority of what you taste, touch, and taste all come from the wrapper.

The cigar wrapper is, as stated above, one of the more difficult to cultivate, for example, even though the Dominican Republic is one of the leading tobacco-producing nations, it is incredibly difficult to grow wrapper there.  Then there is Cameroon, the African nation that has become known the world over for their wrapper.

During the 1980s and 90s, several of the top-selling cigars on the market, including H.Upmann and Partagas, used Cameroon wrapper.  Due to different issues, including civil strife in the nation itself, it has become increasingly more difficult to procure Cameroon tobacco.  That is what makes this top 5 so special.  All of these cigars are crafted using aged Cameroon wrapper.

Don Carlos Eye of the Shark

The original Don Carlos line first appeared on the scene in the mid-70s. For its newest inception into the cigar world, blenders at Arturo Fuente modified the tobaccos for this specific release. The Eye of the Shark was released in 2016 to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the Don Carlos line, as well as Fuente Sr. 80th birthday. I’d say those are great reasons to re-release a classic!

This historic cigar is rolled into the legendary Shark size, made only by Arturo Fuente.  It starts out as a rounded belicoso before it transforms into a thick box-press at the end.  This size is limited to only the most special Fuente releases.  Its aged Dominican filler and binder give it a smooth and nutty center.  The Cameroon wrapper really shines on this cigar, giving it an abundance of flavor.  This cigar was named the #1 Cigar of the Year back in 2017.

One thing I couldn’t believe was that this box-pressed beauty is the first time AJ Fernandez has used a Cameroon wrapper, so you know that this cigar is already going to be something special.

As mentioned before, the binder and filler are made up of tobaccos from Nicaragua, and also feature choice Cuban-seed tobaccos as well.
