When talking about “Limited Cigars”, what are we ACTUALLY talking about? If you’re a novice smoker, we don’t want you to think because you see “limited” in front of a cigar, then it makes it that much better than regular production lines.

But when a cigar is classified as a “limited edition”, it can be a number of different things. There can be rare tobaccos that were harvested for the wrapper, binder, or filler. There can be a well-known brand established within the industry that is created in a different shape and size. Lastly, a cigar that is celebrating an anniversary can classify as a limited edition cigar as well.

Companies like Tatuaje, Crowned Heads, and Perdomo which are featured on this list have perfected the art of creating some great limited-edition smokes over the last half-decade. The only caveat to the limited edition trend is that these cigars can sell out in a blink of an eye. So when you’re able to get your hands on some rare, limited edition cigars, it’s best to swipe them up and add them to your humidor as quickly as possible.

First up on our 2023 Top 5 Limited Edition Cigars is a smoke that came out of the Crowned Heads camp in late 2022. The Azul y Oro Toro is another limited edition gem from Crowned Heads. With the success of the Las Calaveras line, from Crowned Heads, he hopes that limited edition gem can pave the way for the Azul y Oro.

The Azul y Oro also marks the first official blend collaboration between Crowned Heads and Nicaraguan American Cigars S.A., which leads to a riveting backstory of the cigar. Over a decade ago, Crowned Heads brand owners Mike Conder and Jon Huber traveled to meet with Gustavo Cura of Oliva Tobacco Co. and NACSA. The two gifted Cura a bottle of his favorite blended whisky, which is famous for its iconic blue label (hence the blue band on the cigar). Fast forward to 2022,  Conder and Huber’s inspiration to create the Crowned Heads Azul y Oro Limited Edition Toro.

This medium-bodied toro has filler tobacco from Nicaragua and Italy, secured by a Nicaraguan binder, while beautiful Ecuadorian Habano tobaccos are cloaked over the smoke and used as the wrapper. Once lit, you’ll detect notes of cedar, leather, and dark chocolate, punctuated by zesty notes of black pepper.

Next up on the 2023 Top 5 Limited Edition Cigars for 2023, we have the Tatuaje Mexican Experiment II. The first one was released in 2011 as a limited production run it sold out in record time.

Fast forward to 2019, Pete Johnson released the Tatuaje Mexican Experiment II at PCA. The only difference with this sequel is that these gems have returned as a regular production line and are made in small batch quantities.

The Tatuaje M.E. II utilizes the same Mexican wrapper from the first installment. This scrumptious wrapper is cloaked over aged Nicaraguan tobaccos that make up the binder and filler. While smoking this full-bodied cigar, you’ll detect flavor notes of earth, chocolate, black pepper, cedar, and coffee on the backend.

For this limited-edition smoke, Espinosa teamed up with famous restaurateur Guy Fieri to create a medium-bodied gem that has landed atop many year-end lists for 2022. The Hot New Knuckle Sandwich Maduro cigars are a project that Espinosa and Fieri have been working on for almost two years, with the intent of providing a premium cigar that’s best enjoyed when smoked after a gourmet meal
