Cold Weather Cigars & Great Beer Pairings

January 18, 2018

There’s little doubt that cigar smoking is often best in unison, shared with your fellow connoisseurs over a cold beer and some great laughs. While (most) everyone appreciates a perfectly complementing beer, being able to match a premium smoke with anything is really a skill one acquires with experience, over time. But winter is heavily upon us, and there’s a slew of great seasonal brews out there that just need to be experienced with a hearty, cold weather cigar! Take a look at some of these pairings below, and let us know what you think:

L’Atelier Surrogates Bone Crusher &

Founder’s Porter:

Bone Crusher is among the finest varieties in L’Atelier’s Surrogates lineup, and an ideal cold-weather choice. This robust beauty is chock-full of earthy, leathery notes, which perfectly balance against an undertone of roasted espresso, brown sugar and molasses. It’s an amazing smoke that’ll warm you up and stimulate your palate, and it’s even better against a cold pint of Founder’s Porter. With a similar complex, neither the smoke nor the beer take away from the other’s profile. Instead, these two rushes of rich characteristics work together, resulting in a deep combination of full-flavor, which is surprisingly sweet for all its vigor.

RoMa Craft CroMagnon &

Anchor Steam Christmas Ale*:

Well, it’s not really for Christmas, because this delicious batch is brewed through the end of January, and ships through February. But damn, does it go great with RoMa Craft’s incredibly distinct CroMagnon. Now typically, the rule of thumb is to not let one component overpower the other, so mixing two extremely flavorful (and relatively heavy) items is generally a no-no. But both of these offerings are so unique, it just works. If you haven’t experienced this brilliant boutique blend from RoMa Craft yet, it has to be put on your to-do list. But I’d urge you not to wait, as this seasonal Anchor Steam release will make for a combo that’ll leave you counting down till the next batch.

If you can’t get the Christmas Ale, Anchor Steam’s traditional amber ale makes for a great substitute!

Aging Room Solera Corojo &

Sam Adams Winter Lager:

This fuller-bodied gem from Rafael Nodal’s Boutique Blends, is loaded with lively peppery spice, over a balanced core of chocolate and woodsy nuances. Displaying sweet notes of vanilla and slightly bitter hints of cocoa, any rich, amber ale, stout, or porter would make a great complement to this popular premium stogie. But something like a Sam Adams Winter Lager should be common enough to move this smoking session out of your home and into a lounge, as it’s a nationally distributed, and often-carried beer selection.

Perdomo 20th Anniversary Maduro &

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale:

Perdomo’s 20th Anniversary Maduro cigars use a fiery blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos and a Cuban-seed wrapper, both of which have been meticulously fermented in an aged bourbon barrel. This full-bodied, celebratory smoke has been a hit with seasoned connoisseurs everywhere, and is sure to make any tobacconist’s list of best cold-weather cigars. Its bold hints of dark-roasted espresso are the perfect complement to one of the most popular winter beers in the country— Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale. This amber IPA is brewed at the end of the annual hop harvest, and makes for the perfect pairing to an equally popular, and flavorful winter cigar!
