The 10 Best Premium Cigars

July 29, 2015

Below are my choices for the 10 Best Premium cigars. Being an avid cigar enthusiast, I wish I could have listed my top 50, because there are so many great brands that I consistently enjoy on a regular basis. Some will disagree with my selections, because we all have different tastes, but  if you are new to cigar smoking, or trying to find  a new brand or you want to experiment with, hopefully this list will give you some great ideas.

CAO Brazilia Amazon

The tangy, dark and oily Brazilian wrapper on these beauties add so much kick that I find these cigars irresistible. One of CAOs finest and most famous blends, the Brazilia in my opinion, is one of the strongest cigars on the market.

The stunning outer leaf covering this big cigar combined with vintage Nicaraguan filler makes for an amazingly robust, yet complex, and well-balanced smoke.

Omar Ortez Maduro Toro

Although this cigar may not make many other top 10 lists, I find this fabulous full-bodied smoke delicious. This solidly packed, and generously sized Toro, features a well- aged, robust blend of Nicaraguan and Panamanian long-filler tobaccos, a peppery Mexican binder, and a dark and rich Nicaraguan maduro wrapper.

Being a huge fan of cigar maker extraordinaire Omar Ortez, he always manages to create a slow burning cigar with tons of complexity.

I think his Maduro Toro is one of his best offerings. Bold, satisfying and offering the perfect melding of spicy, sweet, and earthy flavors that linger well on the palate, this a cigar that I could easily smoke all day.

Padron 1964 Aniversary Series

The amazing super premium Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Torpedo is medium bodied in strength and smooth as silk. In fact, I can’t think of a cigar with a more creamy flavor profile than this stunning Figurado.

These all Nicaraguan (puro) smokes are loaded with full, rich, earthy, and nutty flavors supplemented by warm pleasant notes of java, cocoa, sweet spice, and creamy butterscotch.

The 1964 Torpedo leaves such a soothing taste on my palate, that I often find smoking just one leaves me yearning for more.

Perdomo Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Connecticut

I have always been a huge fan of Perdomo cigars. The time and effort he puts into every single stick is remarkable. Out of his whole premium portfolio, I think the Perdomo Double Aged 12 Year Vintage Connecticut Gordo Extra is the one I would pick to take along on that proverbial tropical island. This well packed, hefty vitola is aged for 12 years – 10 in bales, and 2 more in bourbon barrels.

These masterpieces are medium in body, with flavors of nuts, oak, cedar, caramel and a luscious touch of Bourbon notes still lingering from the fermentation process.

I can honestly say that I have never smoked a Punch cigar that I didn’t love. However, the popular Punch Gran Puro Sierra truly knocked my socks off! Fans of all Honduran (puro) tobacco will hit the jackpot when smoking this astounding, medium to full bodied Double Corona.

The tobaccos used in these beauties are hand-selected from the Honduran San Agustin Valley, with a proprietary wrapper grown exclusively for this cigar.

With its astounding complexity and balance, a multitude of rich, nutty and subtly sweet spice notes, this a cigar that I always have handy.

El Rico Habano

I have had the good fortune to smoke many genuine Havana cigars in my lifetime, and without a doubt, the El Rico Habano Corona Suprema is every bit as good (if not better) than most of them! A hefty 6 x 50 displays this vitolas bold and zesty blend of top-quality Nicaraguan tobaccos carefully aged since 2001. Finished with a lush, reddish brown sun-grown EMS Ecuador Sumatra wrapper leaf, this handmade premium cigar offers a heavy-duty strength profile and incredibly authentic flavors of earth, spice, coffee bean, and cedar with a peppery zing. Considered by many the Rolls Royce of cigars, a top 10 list would not be complete without this legendary brand. My personal favorite in the line, the super-premium Davidoff Millennium Blend Series Robusto is a medium-bodied cigar that can very easily spoil your palate for life!

An unsurpassed recipe of Dominican long-filler leaf finished with a lush and magnificently rich-looking Ecuador wrapper; arouse the senses with their perfectly balanced, complex flavors of buttery cream, caramel, earth, spice, and cedar. Named after one of Americas most legendary authors, the Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story is a fitting tribute to this great man. This painstakingly crafted Figurado from Carlos Fuente is aged for six months to a year in aromatic cedar lined aging rooms to fully enhance their flavor and aroma. The result is lavish notes of almonds, sweet cream, buttery toast, cedar, and sweet spice. Don’t let the small size fool you, the Short Story burns incredibly slow and even, allowing you to savor every extraordinary puff.

First introduced to the now famous El Rey del Mundo brand back in 1993, this cigar has since become one of my all-time favorites. Then a couple of years ago, the brand crossed the Honduran border into Nicaragua to create an exciting new blend that immediately had me hooked! The big, bold, and bountiful El Rey del Mundo Reserva Nicaragua Robusto Suprema has put this Nicaragua-born beauty near the very top of my all-time favorite list. Liga Privada T52

T52 in stark contrast to Drew Estate’s enormously popular  flavored cigars, is the second non-aromatic blend created by Steve Saka for his own personal enjoyment, thankfully, Steve released he had another winner on his hands and unleashed this beauty to the market. The blend consists of full-flavored, aged premium Nicaraguan tobaccos cloaked in a stunning, oily Habano wrapper.  The recipe brings tons of unique complexity to the palate with an abundance of spicy characteristics that take center stage throughout the smoke and ends with a powerfully robust finish. Perfect after a hearty meal and casual cocktails, Liga Privada T52 Toro is a high-octane masterpiece that I would whole-heartedly call my favorite premium smoke.
