5 Quick Fixes for Common Cigar Issues

July 19, 2018

There’s nothing like enjoying your favorite cigar while relaxing but at some point, everyone experiences a few common issues. These problems are easily fixed so here are some helpful tips so you can continue to enjoy your cigar whether it’s a peeling wrapper, tunneling, or an uneven burn.

Cigar Tunneling

Tunneling is quite common and easily fixed. This is where the wrapper cools or even goes out while the filter keeps burning, causing a hole or tunnel in the cigar.

One way to prevent this is to be sure that you are puffing on a consistent basis in order to prevent the wrapper from cooling.

To fix it, you will need to torch the wrapper leaf but keep in mind that if the tunnel is longer than a centimeter, it may be best to throw it out and start over. If it is shorter, you may clip the end and light it again.

Cigar Coning

Coning is like tunneling but totally opposite. This is instead where the wrapper is burning faster than your tobacco, causing a shape of a cone.

To prevent this from happening, do not smoke too fast.

To fix the problem, simply set your cigar down to let it cool for a minute or two and then smoke slower when you resume enjoying your cigar.

Cigar Canoeing

A cigar that is humidified unevenly or lit incorrectly can shows up as a divergence in the burn lines that can sometimes be quite severe.

To prevent this, rotate your cigar while you are smoking it. This allows the ash to heat at a more even pace.

To fix canoeing, either choose the side burning more slowly and light it or use a little moisture on the side that is burning faster.

A Peeling Wrapper

Sometimes you will find a wrapper that is damaged, cracking, or peeling and there is nothing you can do that would have prevented it. There is, however, a fix for when you find this problem.

If you are on-the-go, use some lip balm but a good fix is to have a box of pectin at home for this very problem. This dry ingredient is cheap and easily mixes with water to form a bond (similar to cigar glue) you can use to seal a crack. Make sure to let it dry well and if you have nothing on-hand, use a tiny amount of a beverage to the cigar then seal the crack by running a match against the wrapper lightly.

Runners

This is something that can just happen out of nowhere but it’s not a big deal. A runner is when the burn line of your cigar starts acting like a fuse, which may be due to the tiny veins in the tobacco leaf.

To fix this problem simply apply a little moisture to the area of the wrapper that is right behind the runner. You can use spit if you want and this allows the cigar the ability to catch up and slows down the runner.

None of these problems are the end of the world – just inconveniences. The good news is almost every situation has a fix and as long as you know what to do, you can sit back and forget about all of your troubles while smoking a relaxing and flavorful cigar.
