How to Light a Cigar

November 9, 2018

Lighting a cigar can be difficult for a first-time user. However, with a little practice, you will soon become an expert. Follow the four tips on this list and learn how to light a cigar properly.

1. Choose a Cigar

First, choose a cigar that you want to smoke. Consider the shape, size, and body of the cigar. A good place to get started is with JR Cigars, the world’s largest cigar store, with a wide range of handmade and machine rolled cigars from the biggest brands. Need a suggestion? One of my favorites is the Acid Cigars line from Drew Estate – it’s full of flavor.

2. Choose the Right Matches or Lighter

Next, light your cigar. You can use matches or a lighter. Some wooden matches might take away from the taste of your cigar, so choose a high-quality cigar lighter from JR Cigars.

3. Light Your Cigar

Hold your box of matches or cigar lighter about an inch from your cigar. Light your matches or lighter and slowly rotate your cigar as you light it — a process called “toasting.” It dries out the tobacco leaves and makes your cigar taste great. It might take you a little while to learn the toasting method, but keep at it!

“Think of how you toast a marshmallow over a campfire,” says the Art of Manliness. “You keep it adjacent to, but not touching, the flame, and slowly turn it to get an even burn. Do the same thing with the foot of your cigar.”

4. Place the Cigar in Your Mouth

After you have toasted your cigar, place it in between your lips. Take a few puffs from your cigar until the tip starts to glow. Hold the smoke in your mouth for a few seconds and then slowly exhale. Place the cigar in your mouth and delicately puff on it while lighting the uncut end, rotating the cigar so it lights evenly.
