Arturo Fuente Drink Pairings Part 2

December 3, 2015

If you have read my previous list, I’m sure you realize the grueling work it took to try all those cigar and drink pairings. Well, of course I was forced to do it again, what a nightmare. So lets now take a look at some more Fuente pairings, this time with some of the most sought after and exclusive lines that they offer. Today we will be enjoying an Opus X Lost City, The God of Fire Serie Aniversario, and the Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario. Lets see how it goes.

The Opus X Lost City has an interesting backstory. When filming the movie The Lost City, actor Andy Garcia requested to film a scene at the Fuente farm. Since filming would take place in the offseason, Carlos put aside several acres and grew their just for the movie. This tobacco was then cured and aged and became the Lost City. It is a delicious medium-full body with dark brown Dominican wrapper. It is spicy with hints of pepper, but also a delicious dark aroma with blasts of cocoa and caramel. I was lucky enough to enjoy this with a glass of Balvenie. It is rich and flavorful, with notes of dark chocolate and oak. Beer drinkers should look to a rich chocolate stout.

Now although I am a fan of the God of Fire by Carlito and the God of Fire by Don Carlos, it is the Aniversario that really brought a smile to my face. It uses a bold Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with choice Dominican filler. It has a hint of a spice, with great tones of chocolate followed by a floral aroma. A good Highland Scotch, such as Oban, will match up nice with its smooth and floral taste. On the suggestion of a friend, I enjoyed a Tröegs Nugget Nectar IPA, which was a phenomenal pairing!

For the last entry on this list, we have a new addition to the JR Cigar lineup, the rare and sought after Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario. Made in honor of three decades of quality, this cigar is a true representation of its namesake. While it uses the same great binder and filler as the original Don Carlos, it now uses the same delicious Dominican wrapper as the Opus X. After being aged for 2 years, it emits a terrific flavor profile with notes of cream, almonds, spice and cocoa. For this rare cigar I went with rare American bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle 15 Family Reserve. It is smooth with notes of brown sugar and vanilla. Ommegang Three Philosophers is a sweet, rich Belgian Ale which blended perfectly.

I can do these pairings all day folks, so if you have any suggestions do not hesitate. Until then, keep reading and keep enjoying.
