Best Cigars to Pair on international Mojito Day

At JR Cigars, we love pairing our favorite drinks and cigars together, which is why we’ve created a whole series based around pairing cigars with everyone’s favorite tipples.

Today, we’re going to look at which cigars work well with one of the best drinks in the world – the mojito.

This refreshing and delicious cocktail is popular around the world and has become a staple of the summer drink genre, and in this current climate take any occasion to celebrate with a nice drink.

The history of the mojito cocktail

The history dates back several hundred years.  The concoction is a blend of white rum, sugar cane juice, lime juice, soda, and of course, mint.  This variation is said to be derived from the 17th century.

When British sailors would visit Cuba and fall ill, they would rely on local native medicines for treatment.  One of the medicines was a cruel form of the drink, which mixed a very base form of rum with sugar cane juice and mint.

There are also stories of how African slaves use to utilize rum and the juice from the sugar canes while working on the vast sugar plantations.  The cocktail eventually progressed with the inclusion of soda and lime to become the popular drink it is today.

When celebrating International Mojito Day, pairing it with a few cigars would seem fitting.  The history of these two items is intertwined.

Both have their origins in Cuba, and many cigar bars feature a signature mojito style drink.  So, we have put together a small list of some great cigars to enjoy with a delicious Mojito.

Arturo Fuente Hemingway

This cigar works on so many different levels.  Let’s talk about the historical context first.  Ernest Hemingway, the famed author for which this cigar was named, spent a large portion of his life living in Cuba.

He became a well-known fan of the Mojito and even made one local bar famous for their version of the cocktail.  You can read more about that here.

The famed Fuente storefront in Las Vegas, Casa Fuente, is also very well-known for its famed mojito, which I had the pleasure of trying only once.

On top of that, the Hemingway is a medium body cigar, using finely aged Dominican tobaccos as well as a toothy Cameroon wrapper.

This combination of tobaccos gives it a solid medium body along with notes of leather, earth, nuts, and a slight sweetness.  This incredibly smooth cigar won’t overshadow the drink and makes for one hell of a pairing.

Montecristo Classic

For this pairing, we have two immense classics with similar roots.  The Montecristo Classic is one of the core cigars of the Montecristo line along with the Original, White, Platinum, and Nicaragua.

It was crafted to represent the smooth nature and high-quality of those original Cuban Montecristos.  Its box is also known to resemble those classic, yellow Cuban boxes.

Along with a shared history, the flavor and overall quality of the cigar make it a great partner for the mojito.  It is a mellow smoke, with a smooth, refreshing aroma.

With notes of slight vanilla and grass with a solid creamy undertone create a top-notch, mellow cigar that will go well with the smooth and also refreshing cocktail.

Espinosa Laranja Reserva

In terms of a pure flavor partner, there is none better for the legendary mojito then one of my favorite cigars of all time — the Espinosa Laranja Reserva.

This iconic cigar has been a must-have for the past several years and helped establish Erik Espinosa as one of the preeminent manufacturers in Nicaragua.  From its amazing backstory to its top-notch blend and colorful band, the Laranja is an all-around must smoke.

What makes this a great cigar for this article is its unique flavor profile.  By using a select seed of Brazilian tobaccos, the Laranja has a wonderful amount of spice, but also a layer of distinct citrus notes.

Any beverage with a lemon or lime or orange base is a perfect match for the Laranja due to that unique and refreshing citrus flavor.
