Viaje Cigars to Try this Spring

Viaje is the epitome of boutique cigar companies everywhere.  Its founder, Andre Farkas, believes that by making each of his lines as limited, small-batch releases, he is not only able to keep the cigars consistent but also he can experiment with different themes and artwork each time. To the average customer, this might confuse you in terms of keeping track of the Viaje portfolio.

However, for those of you in the know, Viaje is an exciting brand that will keep you guessing with its new releases.  To make it slightly easier for new smokers, I’ve put together a little list of some of the great Viajes to try this spring.  Now, remember, there are some great Viajes that aren’t on this list, but due to the limited quantities of each one, they aren’t available right now.

Viaje Juntos 2018

Originally known simply as Collaboration, the Viaje Juntos series is a sometimes annual release.  Each one features Andre teaming up with a different manufacturer to create a unique and flavorful blend from two distinct styles.  The year 2018 saw him team up with legendary blender Ernesto Perez Carrillo.

Handrolled at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic, the 2018 Juntos is crafted using vintage Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and my absolute favorite, the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.  It offers deep chocolate notes combined with a bit of pepper and oak for a well-balanced and rich smoke.

Viaje Hamaki Omakase 2017

The name of this cigar is one of the reasons that the blend of information on it is minimal.  These limited runs first came out in 2017.  Hamaki, is Japanese for the cigar, while Omakase is a unique Japanese dining experience where you basically leave it up to the chef.  When enjoying Omakase, you have no say or idea what you will be eating; that’s exactly how this cigar was made.

The information that we do have tells us that this version was made by the Quesada family in the Dominican Republic.  It is a delicious medium to full-bodied smoke, with notes of almonds and cream.  I definitely suggest trusting the chef on this one.

Viaje Nicaragua Leaded Exclusivo

The Exclusivo line began as a private line of cigars that Andre made just for himself.  However, he saw the potential in the cigar and began to create them as a limited production run.  While there are a few different Exclusivo lines, I have always found myself drawn to the Nicaraguan Leaded.  This high octane smoke just has everything I’m looking for in a cigar.

The cigar is crafted at the Aganorsa factory in the heart of Nicaragua.  It is a Nicaraguan puro and is cloaked in a stunning Corojo 99 wrapper.  White pepper, earth spice and a dash of wood make this a great cigar for the Nicaraguan lover.

Viaje Bales on Bales

For this limited run, Andre took inspiration from the modern-day beer industry.  Bales on Bales was set to be the first in what is known as the Viaje Craft Series.  To start out the project, Andre again turned to one of his most trusted collaborators, Aganorsa.

Again, the blend information on the Bales on Bales is quite limited.  We do know it’s a Nicaraguan puro and that it is a solid medium strength, and medium to full in body.  It also has some terrific notes of earth and wood.
