Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 Cigar Review

October 18, 2018

Ever cigar smoker in the world has heard of the magic and wonder that is Cuban cigars.  While many believe them to be overrated or not as good as they once were, it goes without saying that Cuban tobacco is among the worlds most popular and sought after luxury good. While Cuban cigars such as Cohiba and Montecristo usually steal the limelight, true aficionados have other options that they would rather smoke.  This includes such as H.Upmann, Partagas and of course Hoyo de Monterrey Cuban cigars.  When tasked with picking which Cuban cigars I would choose for this project, I knew that the real cigar community would love to see a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 Cuban cigar review.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 is unlike most popular Cuban cigars.  Cuban cigar such as Cohiba or Punch is known for their intense strength and flavor profiles.  The Hoyo de Monterrey is more known for its smooth aroma, balanced flavors, and complexity.  It is not a mellow cigar by any means, but its flavors are balanced perfectly throughout the smoke, provided an ever-changing profile.  The cigar starts with a dash of pepper and cinnamon, before transitioning into a more rich center, with notes of cedar, cocoa, and nuts.  Not one flavor is more overpowering than the others, keeping everything nuanced and subtle.

The composition of this cigar hasn’t changed in decades, yet it still finds ways of surprising people.  As recent as 2016, this cigar was named the #9 Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado Magazine.  It remains a fan favorite and is highly sought after by informed members of the Cuban cigar community.

While the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 is itself a fantastic smoke, there are non-Cuban options both in size and profile that will deliver the same flavorful experience.  While smoking the Hoyo, my mind immediately went to the work of EP Carrillo.  From his early days working on La Gloria Cubana, to his current brands and collaborations with The Crowned Heads, Ernesto’s blends have a similarity in both construction and complexity to this tremendous cigar.  However, to conclude this Hoyo de Monterrey review, if you happen to stumble into a Cuban cigar store one day and have the chance to enjoy an authentic Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 Cuba cigar, it’s a chance you cannot pass up.
