World Cigar Day

World Cigar Day

This Thursday is World Cigar Day, and what a day it will be!  It is the day we celebrate the wonder and art form that is a cigar.  Oddly enough, the day was not made to commemorate the traditional origin of cigars in the Caribbean.  It was made to honor German businessman and inventor Oscar Hammerstein I.

Oscar came to New York from Germany and helped invent the original cigar rolling machines, turning cigars into a mass-produced item; forever increasing their popularity.  To commemorate the rich history and the worldwide popularity of cigars, I’ve put a list together of some great smokes from around the globe you can enjoy celebrating the day.

H.Upmann Herman’s Batch The Banker

This cigar celebrates another German cigar inventor, the founder of the H.Upmann brand, Herman Upmann.  This special edition was added just this year to the top-selling Banker series, and is among my personal favorite from that line.

The Herman’s Batch is a smooth and flavorful, medium-bodied smoke.  It is rolled using aged Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos, followed by a double fermented, four-year-old Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.  This blend of tobaccos gives it a rich and zesty profile, with hints of wood, spice, and cocoa.

AJ Fernandez Dias de Gloria

The Dias de Gloria was the newest cigar from AJ Fernandez, having just launched in late 2019.  The theme and artwork are meant to resemble the glory days of cigars, the pre-embargo days when many considered Cuban tobacco to be at its finest. This makes it perfect to enjoy on World Cigar Day.

It is a Nicaraguan puro using only tobaccos from AJ’s personal farms, some of this tobacco has been aged up to seven years, which explains its incredibly smooth aroma.  Notes of earthy tobacco, sweet spice, nuts, and rich wood are delivered with every puff, creating a flavorful and balanced cigar.

CAO Amazon Basin

Ricky Rodriquez and the team at CAO knocked it out of the park with this incredible cigar.  The Amazon Basin is hand-rolled with special filler tobacco known as Brazilian Braganca.  It is grown deep in the Amazon rain forest and is only harvested once every three years, making this one of the most unique cigars on the market.

The addition of Dominican and Colombian filler tobaccos, along with a stunning Sumatra wrapper will give you a once in a lifetime cigar experience.  It is rich and zesty, with a savory sweetness that starts small and grows through the cigar.  The band is actually a twisted piece of tobacco, adding a nice little visual touch to an already stunning cigar.

Cabañas

In celebrating the history of cigars, you cannot leave out Cabanas.  This is the first verified brand to ever come out of Cuba, years before Romeo or H.Upmann.  This new version is a private label made just for us by the legendary Don Pepin Garcia. Rolled at the My Father factory in the heart of Esteli, Nicaragua, the Cabanas uses a blend of aged Nicaraguan tobaccos for the filler, followed by a double binder from Jalapa and Esteli.

The truly eye-catching piece, is the exquisite Habano Rosado wrapper, the same used on the original My Father line, with a slight reddish hue to it.  This combination of tobaccos gives the medium to full-bodied cigar a rich and complex profile.   Notes of spice, coffee, and molasses are combined effortlessly to give you a flavorful yet smooth experience.

Arturo 8-5-8 Maduro

There was no way I was going to make a list of cigars to celebrate this day and not include one of the most popular and well-known brands in the world, Arturo Fuente.  Yes, I could have gone with an Anejo or Opus X, as they are the prize brands, however, I instead went with the old reliable, 8-5-8.

The 8-5-8 is one of the Fuentes best-selling cigars and the best everyday smoke for a premium aficionado.  While it is available in a few wrapper varieties, including a Cameroon or the super rare Sungrown, the Maduro, with its Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, has to be my favorite.  Its rich flavor, smooth draw, top construction, and a great price, makes this one of the best bangs for your buck in the entire industry.
