In 1971, Lew Rothman opened up a small cigar store in Manhattan that had premium and handmade cigars piled all the way up to the ceiling. The now famous sign out front read “World’s Largest Cigar Store.” If just passing buy you’d find it hard to believe, but once inside, with little room to walk without bumping into a mountain of stogies, you would quickly realize that the sign was correct. As the store gained popularity through various unique promotions and rock bottom pricing, Lew began to display large quantities of cigars, but do to limited real estate, he had to display them singularly and crush the boxes.
On an inspiration, he called Dan Blumenthal, then the co-owner of Villazon and asked him how much it would cost him to buy Punch and Hoyo cigars without the boxes. At the time, it was an unheard of way to do business, but with plenty of coaxing on Lew’s behalf, it came to fruition. Making a VERY long story short, the “Generic Bundle” business was born, and this became the precursor to our enormously popular JR Alternative cigar line.
Fast forward to 2016, and you will find that this initial purchase has led to a huge variety of premium handmade cigars that are exclusively made for JR, both in bundle variety, and line extensions made by the most prominent manufacturers in the industry.
