Filler – Nicaragua

Origin – Nicaragua

Strength – Medium-Full

Wrapper Shade – EMS

We start off strong with a powerful full-bodied smoke, the Plasencia Alma del Fuego. The third entry in Plasencia’s Alma series, Alma del Fuego translates directly to the soul of fire and these gems live up to their name in more ways than just their flavor. Along with some Nicaraguan Jalapa that adds a touch of sweetness, the rest of the blend features tobaccos from the island of Ometepe.

Ometepe is a volcanic island that lies at the center of Lake Nicaragua, and the soils that coat the island are exceedingly fertile and rich thanks to the fiery explosions of the volcanos. Tobaccos are grown here take on a distinctly rich and complex character that is truly unique.

These incredibly rich and unique tobaccos combine to create a rich and savory medium-full-bodied smoke that presents a tapestry of leather, earth, white pepper, coffee, and decadent tobacco sweetness. If you are a connoisseur of balance, complexity, and power, Alma del Fuego should be first on your list for what to try next.

Foundation El Gueguense

Wrapper Type – Nicaragua

Binder – Nicaragua

Filler – Nicaragua

Origin – Nicaragua

Strength – Medium-Full

Wrapper Shade – EMS

While our third entry is a bit of an older release compared to the others, Foundation El Gueguense set the stage for Nick Melillo’s meteoric rise to prominence. In the inaugural release for Melillo’s Foundation Cigar Co., Melillo wanted to capture and honor the culture of Nicaragua with a blend that expressed the best that Nicaraguan tobaccos have to offer.

Named after a 500-year-old indigenous drama that satirized the newly arriving Conquistadors, El Gueguense is a staple of Nicaraguan culture and history. Melillo selected a blend of vintage Criollo and Corojo tobaccos grown in Nicaragua’s Jalapa and Esteli regions, including a Corojo 99 Jalapa wrapper that was shade-grown to ensure the leaf is flawless and top-shelf.

Embodying the dance El Gueguense performs in the drama, these gems will provide a medium-full-bodied bouquet of oak, leather, toffee, dark chocolate, earth, peppery spice, and sweet tobacco notes that dance on the palate with each puff. The quintessential Nicaraguan smoke, the way Foundation El Gueguense captures the essence of Nicaragua has made it a staple in humidors everywhere.

Drew Estate Undercrown 10

Wrapper Type – San Andres Mexican

Binder – Broadleaf

Filler – Nicaragua

Origin – Nicaragua

Strength – Medium-Full

Wrapper Shade – Maduro

Released in the summer of 2021 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Undercrown line, Undercrown 10 took the brand to new heights of luxury. As the story goes, back in the day Drew Estate told its rollers to stop smoking so much of the famous Liga Privada so that they could be sold.

In response to this request, the rollers took the same tobaccos, but different vintages and primings, and rolled them together in a blend for themselves to enjoy. “Under the crown” of Liga Privada, is how Undercrown was born.

For Undercrown 10, Drew Estate pulled out all the stops to bring Undercrown out from under the crown of Liga Privada. With a blend of top-shelf tobaccos including a San Andres Mexican wrapper, a hearty Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and masterfully aged Nicaraguan long-fillers, the Undercrown 10 is without a doubt the best Undercrown yet.

Joya de Nicaragua Cinco Decadas

Wrapper Type – Nicaragua

Binder – Nicaragua

Filler – Nicaragua

Origin – Nicaragua

Strength – Medium-Full

Wrapper Shade – EMS

We close out our list of Top 5 Consensus cigars with another anniversary blend, this one celebrating the 50th anniversary of Nicaragua’s oldest cigar brand, Joya de Nicaragua. Appropriately named Joya de Nicaragua Cinco Decadas, these top-of-the-line smokes not only honor the legacy of Joya de Nicaragua, but also the people that helped it to 50 years of success but not without some trials and tribulations.

A brief history of Joya de Nicaragua was formed in 1968 by former Cuban cigar makers and quickly became a popular choice in the United States, even becoming a favorite of President Nixon. However, the brand hit a roadblock in the 80s following the Sandinistas taking control of Nicaragua and the subsequent US embargo.

In the 1990s the embargo fell, but Joya de Nicaragua was still struggling. Dr. Alejandro Martinez Cuenca, a former Sandinista official, saw the potential of Joya de Nicaragua and invested in, transformed, and brought the brand back to its former, and current glory.

Honoring that legacy, Cinco Decadas is made entirely with the finest vintage Nicaraguan tobaccos for the long fillers, binder, and wrapper, to provide a wholly elegant and luxurious smoke. Once you get a flame to the foot, your palate will be greeted by a complex and refined medium-full bodied tapestry of sweet spice, earth, cedar, white pepper, and leather, summing up to one of the best Cuban-style smokes out there.
