When fall arrives, there are a few activities that are an absolute must. One of those seasonal activities is going to a winery.
For those unfamiliar, a winery is a property of land that produces wine, much like a brewery.
Wineries usually boast a beautiful indoor space where they provide plenty of seats, a plethora of options of wine, and, sometimes, food trucks so you can enjoy some good food with good wine.
Since 2009, the number of US wineries has gone from 7,000 to 11,000 in total, seeing a significant rise in popularity over the last decade. Personally, I love going to a local winery with some good food, a fist full of dollars for some good wine, and cigars to pair alongside whatever type of wine I’ll be drinking.
Without further ado, here are our top five cigars to bring to a Winery!
Arturo Fuente Hemingway
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Medium
Size: Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story (4 x 49)
Smoke Time: 60 minutes
The first cigar we’re featuring on our top five cigars to bring to a winery is the Arturo Fuente Hemingway in the 4 x 49 Short Story. The Arturo Fuente Hemingway line has dozens of sizes, but the Short Story is their most popular due to its interesting perfecto shape and being a time-friendly cigar.
From flame to the nub, you can finish this cigar within an hour. So, if you’re at the winery all day and smoke a Short Story, you’ll have time to squeeze in another smoke.
One of the main reasons I chose this smoke to bring to a winery was the flavor notes. The Short Story will complement most, if not all, red wines. Hints of cedar, roasted nuts, and dried fruit will easily go hand-in-hand with any toothy glass of wine. The Cameroon wrapper and the tobaccos from the Dominican Republic go well with one another without wine, but your smoking experience will only improve once you add a glass of red or white to the mix.
Oliva Connecticut Reserve
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Medium
Size: Olivia Connecticut Reserve Robusto (5 x 50)
Smoke Time: 70 minutes
Next on our top five cigars to bring to a winery, we have the delicious medium-bodied smoke — the Oliva Connecticut Reserve in the 5 x 50 Robusto size.
Due to the Nicaraguan tobaccos that make up the binder and filler and the Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, the flavor profile on this gem is truly something to behold. You’ll experience flavors such as cedar, cream, espresso, and a touch of spice.
With the Oliva Connecticut Reserve being on the lighter side in terms of strength, if you could find a refreshing glass of white wine at the winery, you’ve hit the perfect pairing paydirt.
The Oliva Connecticut Reserve in any of the six sizes available can pair alongside a dry, woodsy white or a wet, sweet-toothed red if you want some clashing flavor notes.
Rocky Patel Decade
Country of Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Sumatra
Binder: Unknown
Filler: Unknown
Strength: Full
Sizes Available: Rocky Patel Decade Robusto 5 x 50
Smoke Time: 70 minutes
For our next cigar to bring to a winery, we have this relatively new classic smoke in the Rocky Patel Decade in the 5 x 50 Robusto size. Created to celebrate the company’s ten years of successful business, the Rocky Patel Decade is cloaked in a scrumptious Sumatra wrapper. Although the binder and filler tobaccos are unidentified, whatever they may be is extremely palate friendly.
Being a full-bodied smoke with wood and red pepper flavor notes, I’d pair the Rocky Patel Decade alongside a lighter wine. If there’s a red or white Sangria available at the winery you’re visiting, I’d recommend that. Make sure you have a full stomach before having this gem.
Ashton Cabinet
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: Medium
Size: Ashton Cabinet No. 4 (5.75 x 46)
Smoke Time: 75-80 minutes
Coming in as the fourth cigar in our list of cigars to enjoy at the winery, we have the Ashton Cabinet No. 4. This medium-bodied smoke from the Dominican Republic features a Connecticut shade wrapper, all while having tobaccos from its home country.
This is one of the more elegant and expensive cigars on this list. So, if I were you, I’d smoke this cigar at the tail end of your visit to the winery and choose a wine that’s on par with the Ashton Cabinet, no matter the quality and price.
Some flavor notes you may detect in this 5.75 x 46 gem are black pepper, cream, and a touch of earth and grass on the backend. Once you take a puff of this Carlos Fuente Jr. creation, you’ll realize it was worth the seven-year wait!
My Father
Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Strength: Full
Size: My Father No. 1 Robusto (5.25 x 52)
Smoke Time: 65-75 minutes
Last up on our top five cigars to bring to a winery is another classic, much like the Ashton Cabinet, from the Fuente family. The original My Father No. 1 Robusto is a full-bodied wonder with an Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper. The Nicaraguan tobaccos that make up the binder and filler hail from Fuente’s famous farm in Esteli, Nicaragua.
This being a full-bodied smoke, I’d pair a nice glass of rose alongside any of the eight sizes under the My Father Cigar line. A lighter wine like a rose or spritzer will coincide with the flavor notes of the My Father perfectly.
Hints of red pepper, cocoa, chocolate, earth, and coffee will only enhance your drinking experience at a winery. I’d light this one up as soon as you get to the winery since it’ll take you a little over an hour or more to finish this breathtaking Nicaraguan stogie.
