President’s Day is one of the most important holidays of the year. In this article, we’ll be taking a look into the complex history of Presidents’ Day, how to celebrate it, and of course, which cigars to enjoy on this great national holiday.
When is Presidents’ Day 2023?
This year Presidents’ Day is on February 19 and is a celebration of our great nation’s founding fathers and leaders. The holiday also falls on the third Monday of every February, thanks to the 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
How did Presidents’ Day start?
President’s Day started in 1880, to celebrate George Washington’s birthday and was then known as “Washington’s Day”.
In 1698, the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill was passed by congress, and this bill moved several federal holidays to Mondays to create three-day weekends to encourage productivity.
During a debate on the Bill, it was noted that George Washington’s birthday was on February 22nd, and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was on February 12th.
Although Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was widely celebrated in many states, it was never official. Despite this, congress rejected the name change to Presidents Day.
The bill, however, went into effect in 1971, and gradually, Presidents’ Day became the commonly accepted name.
How to celebrate Presidents Day
Presidents’ Day is a federal day, which means most people will have an extra day off and the chance to enjoy a three-day weekend, so if you have an extra day off to relax and show appreciation for our founding fathers, there are a few things you can do.
Prepare a president-inspired meal.
Presidents’ Day is a national celebration of George Washington’s birthday, and every birthday celebration calls for good food. Consider planning a menu that may include some popular President’s favorite dishes.
Washington has said he was ‘excessively fond’ of fish, which could be a great choice for your main course. Martha Washington was also an accomplished baker. Consider choosing one of her many favorite dishes for dessert. Examples include macaroons, marzipan, spice cake, and fruit pies of all types.
Spend some time outside enjoying Mother Nature
Washington was known for working outdoors as a surveyor in the Virginia wilderness. Honor this part of his life by enjoying the natural world around you, visiting your favorite park, or spending some time on your favorite hiking trail.
Consider taking a swim or kayak ride in the lake, river, or ocean in honor of Washington’s crossing of Delaware and making the most of mother nature.
Eat Cherry Pie
Cherry pie is one of George Washington’s favorite foods. Eat cherry pie and read Washington’s farewell address. Cherry-based delicacies are consumed because the original purpose of this day was to commemorate Washington’s birthday.
Learn about the US Presidents
In total, we have had 46 presidents, the latest one being Joe Biden. With these individual presidencies, each has guided us through many historical events and created the America we know today.

What better way to enjoy a three-day weekend and honor the founding fathers and leaders of our great nation by kicking back and lighting up a stogie.
