Top 5 2019 IPCPR Cigars

October 10, 2019

Hello, my friends. Nick Libretti here for JRCigars.com. Time for another fantastic top five video. Today, very special. We are doing the top five best of 2019’s IPCPR.

Now, of course, remember this is just kind of like the cigars we’ve gotten in already. Now, we have gotten a lot in, but there are some cigars that I have smoked that I think belong in this list. We will do them at a later time. This is basically a best of IPCPR so far. And that kind of rhymes, so there you go.

Sobremesa Brulee

Starting off, if you’re looking for your typical Connecticut but elevated, this is the one. This is the Sobremesa Brulee from Steve Saka and Dunbarton Tobacco and Co. Outstanding smoke.

Connecticut wrapper on there gives it a very nice, smooth, creamy vanilla-y profile. He literally said this gives you exactly your grandfather’s Connecticut, but it smokes just like that but on an elevated platform, almost like in that Montecristo White or Davidoff format.

Just very high-end, very smooth, very creamy, but also very flavorful. And, of course, being from Steve Saka, the construction is just bar none.

Guardian of the Farm Night Watch

This is one of the few cigars that actually utilizes brand new tobacco. This is the Guardian of the Farm Night Watch from Aganorsa.

They’ve developed a brand new, it’s a shade-grown Corojo Maduro that they grow in the Jalapa region of Nicaragua. It was featured on three of their new blends this year, but I especially loved it on the Guardian of the Farm, which, as you know, is a big favorite of mine. Beautiful Aganorsa tobaccos in there, got that little closed foot. That just looks stunning.

It smokes really well. It’s a very unique profile, got a little smokey notes, some sweetness but also some spice, very complex wrapper on that, and I look forward to seeing how they’re going to use it in the future as well.

My Father La Promesa

One of the highlights from this year’s trade show, and every trade show, is the new release by My Father, and today we have the My Father La Promesa, the promise, taking the name from when Pepin Garcia came to this country, and he promised his family that he was going to do well and really elevate himself in the cigar industry, and look where they are now.

They’re one of the biggest names in the business. Absolutely delicious cigar, uses a Habana Rosado Oscuro wrapper, so you get that nice mix of a little spicy, a little sweet, a little rich, very bold. But the cigar overall on the medium to full body scale. Very much a fan of this cigar. Very much so.

Again, as I’ve talked about, I would like to see a little more difference in the marketing of some of the My Fathers, but in terms of the blends, they’re unique, and each one of them is a hit after a hit after a hit.

Southern Draw Jacob's Ladder Brimstone

You knew this was going to be on here because it’s in every other list that I do. We have the brand new Southern Draw Jacob’s Ladder Brimstone, double perfecto. Look at that, with the double tapers on there, big, bold smoke.

Uses triple ligero tobacco, so somehow it’s even stronger than the previous one. Still uses a lovely Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper on the outside for a dark, hearty, rich, smoky, spicy and sweet cacophony of flavors. Really intense cigar and suggested, please eat something before you smoke this.

It’s going to make it better, but also you don’t want to just, you know … You don’t want that. I don’t want that to happen to you.

H. Upmann 175th Anniversary

This was the surprise of the year, and I think a lot of people could attest to that. We have the H. Upmann 175th Anniversary celebrating almost 200 years of the H. Upmann brand.

This cigar really just took the field. They got a 93 rating already from Cigar Aficionado. Nicaraguan puro crafted by AJ Fernandez for Altadis U.S.A. I already talked about the Hispaniola, which was a great addition to the H. Upmann line up. This is by far the best H. Upmann cigar ever created. You can quote me on that.

Fantastic. Uses a medio tiempo wrapper. Very dark, just very nice, like subtle spices in there. Nothing coming off too much. Not one flavor dominates the profile. A nice nutty bevoui on the retro-hale, and that’s not even a word. I made that word up to describe what this gives you. It’s a bevoui.

Just overall top of the line smoke. And like I said, the best H. Upmann you will ever have.
