The Rebirth of the Jose Marti Cigar

May 24, 2016

When JR introduced the Jose Marti premium handmade cigar in the early 90’s it was welcomed with overwhelming approval and quickly became a smash hit. Our customers loved the superior construction, steadily consistent taste, and most of all, the very affordable price tag. Named after the famous Cuban freedom fighter, the original blend was fashioned in Nicaragua with aged Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, a Honduran binder, and a handsome looking medium brown Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. This proven recipe provides a cigar with straightforward, yet highly satisfying flavors of nuts, coffee, cocoa and hint of spice to liven things up a bit. Bear in mind, that back in the day when these gems were released the market was far less saturated, so with their outstanding taste and budget friendly price point, Jose Marti Nicaragua sold like hotcakes. One year after the original release, the skilled Artisans at N.A.T.S.A where these smokes came from, decided to create a tamer version simply called Jose Marti Dominican. Wrapped in a golden Connecticut shade wrapper leaf joined by aged Dominican binder and fillers, this new, equally affordable line embodied the traditional Dominican-cigar flavor profile with smooth and creamy notes and just a touch of mellow natural sweetness.

Early into the new millennium, this dynamic duo of Jose Marti sticks joined Casa Blanca, JR Ultimate, and Special Jamaicans  as one of our four top selling JR exclusive brands. Than a stogie renaissance happened and tons of new and exciting brands took center stage, sort of leaving these modest sticks in the dust. Once the smoke cleared (pardon the pun) skillful advertising and a weak economy breathed new life into this tasty budget brand.

Seeing a drastic upsurge in sales, a few months ago, we decided to commission a third installment to the series- The Jose Marti Honduras. Therefore, once again, the brand that captured the hearts and palates of millions of herfer’s had a new sibling. This one featuring a stunning Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, a sturdy Honduran binder, and a complex blend of aged filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Jose Marti Honduras offers hearty notes of earth, spice, nuts, coffee, and cedar all backed by a medium to full-bodied flavor profile.

Today, all three Jose Marti installments are doing quite well and continue to offer plenty of bang for the buck while presenting an ample variety of shapes, sizes, and strength profiles. Therefore, why not go “old school” and rediscover this humble, yet very tasty brand for yourself- We think you will be very pleasantly surprised!
