Revisiting the World Famous Hoyo de Monterrey Cigars

April 2, 2019

With so many hot new premium cigars being introduced to the market on a regular basis, it’s often easy for the contemporary smoker to overlook some of the great old Cuban heritage brands that changed the face of the American marker after the infamous Cuban embargo of 1962. One such brand being the world-famous Hoyo de Monterrey cigars.

Today, Hoyo de Monterrey is the name of two cigar brands, one produced in Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company, and the other produced in Honduras by General Cigar. First produced in 1970, the brands’ origin began a few years earlier with tobacco seeds smuggled out of Cuba in a diplomatic pouch.  Under the guidance of master blender and renowned tobacco expert Estelo Padrón, Hoyo de Monterrey became the first authentic Habana-style cigar made outside of Cuba.

Like its Cuban counterpart, the enormously popular Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey cigar is medium to full-bodied in strength. But unlike the Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey cigar that’s made with only 100% Cuban tobaccos, the Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey cigar is deftly rolled with an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper for the lighter shade variety, and a very dark oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper for the Maduro selection. Both styles feature a Connecticut Broadleaf binder surrounding a rich blend of fully aged Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos. The Ecuador Sumatra wrapped Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey cigars offer the aficionado a spicy and earthy smoke, backed by notes of cocoa, leather, and cream, while the much darker Broadleaf Maduro leaf provides tasting notes of chocolate, white pepper, dark roast coffee, and sweet cream.

Since its inaugural release, the Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand has grown exponentially and now offers a host of “Cubanesque” line extensions that include Hoyo de Monterrey Dark SumatraHoyo de Monterrey Certified Vintage,  the Excalibur Series, the affordable Majestic line featured in no-frills bundles.  Also included in the Hoyo de Monterrey portfolio is Hoyo La Amistad Black, and Hoyo La Amistad Silver, two stunning offerings skillfully and modernly reinvented by AJ Fernandez—the famed master blender responsible for some of the best-selling brands on the market today!

The Hoyo de Monterrey cigar lineup doesn’t end here, because in the early 2000’s General Cigar released the Hoyo de Tradicion cigars, a blend created to honor the storied history of the Hoyo de Monterrey marque. To create these celebratory sticks, the highly skilled artisans at Hoyo employed a fully aged blend of rare Honduran San Agustín, Dominican Piloto Cubano, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos from the remote volcanic island of Ometepe, paired with a robust Habano-leaf Connecticut binder and finished with a gorgeous, oily, Viso Rosado wrapper from the Jamastran Valley of Honduras.

The result is a scrumptious, aromatic smoke that’s overflowing with hearty flavors and aromas of earth, roasted nuts, espresso, and sweetness, that almost identically emulates the character and rich nuances of the famous Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey cigar.
