Proud Pappy

November 10, 2014

Drew Estate is coming up with a new cigar in partnership with legendary bourbon producer Pappy Van Winkle.  The new cigar will be called the Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve and will be available sometime in the near future—pre orders started just last week.  The new cigar is being made in Esteli at the Drew Estate factory and will use an Ecuador-grown Habano wrapper over aged fillers from Nicaragua.  The idea is that this cigar is meant to be paired with any of the Pappy Van Winkle bourbons or ryes.

“It's a well rounded, sophisticated cigar, with body and a hearty expression,” says Jonathan Drew.

It is a medium on the strength scale, which makes it approachable for novice and experienced smokers.  Drew’s master blender Willy Herrera notes that it is a normal cigar and not flavored with the Van Winkle bourbon.  He says it is just nice and tasty.  We’ll let you know when it ships.

Symmetrical

Speaking of shipping, Ashton debuted its first new Ashton in many years at the trade show.  The new Ashton line is called Symmetry and it again revives the partnership between the Fuente and the Levin families.  Carlito Fuente blended the original Ashtons and now he has done it again, but this time with a twist.  For the first time an Ashton is using Nicaraguan tobacco in the filler and you can taste the difference.  The Symmetry was supposed to be shipped earlier, but according to Ashton, Carlito decided the cigars needed to rest just a bit more.  As usual, Carlito was right.  The Symmetry that is out now, is better than the one handed out at the show in August.  It is amazing how much things can change in a matter of weeks.  Symmetry uses an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper over Dominican binder with Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers.   Symmetry comes in 5 sizes—5.25” x 52 Belicoso,  6.75” x 49 Prestige, 5.625” x 46 Prism,  5” x 50 Robusto and 6” x 52 Sublime.  MSRP ranges from  $11.50  to $12.75.
