New Year’s Resolutions for 2020

The New Year is now upon us and it is time to make your resolutions for 2020.  While many people will have the typical choices, such as losing weight or giving more to charity, I feel as though this is a unique opportunity to provide you with some top cigar resolutions.

I decided to think of some ways cigar smokers, particularly new ones, can adjust or add to their experience in the new year.  They will mostly revolve around new things and new challenges, as any New Years’ resolution should be.  Let’s take a look at some great cigar New Year’s Resolutions for 2020.

Smoke Outside of Your Comfort Zone

This is by far the most common piece of advice I give to new or even seasoned cigar smokers, so I thought it was a logical first resolution.  There are thousands of different cigars from hundreds of different brands on the market.  Ten years ago, I used to smoke the same five cigars on rotation, while now I won’t smoke the same cigar in a month.

Smoking different brands expand your knowledge and your palate.  For example, I thought I didn’t really like Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers, but I kept trying new cigars that used that tobacco.   Now, three or four of my top cigars use that wrapper; you have to make sure you are open to trying new things.

Take Your Time

For me, cigar smoking is a ritual.  It is a time to relax, appreciate the smaller joys in life, and to enjoy a finely, hand-crafted product.  I almost make sure to put a little time away for myself to really immerse myself in the cigar experience.  I understand that not everyone has as much free time as I do, but it’s important to really take your time with a cigar.

This is why a cigar is a unique tobacco product, as it is not usually made for quick consumption, or to be re lit hours later as a pipe –  it’s something special that deserves your attention.  So, after the holidays, make sure to carve out a little “me time” to really enjoy the full potential of a cigar.

Share Your Cigars

I currently have more cigars then I know what to do with, and all of them are high-end and among my favorites.  So, I make sure to take care of any of my friends or family who enjoy a good cigar.  I routinely put together packages of my own stash for people to enjoy.

This is my favorite way to get people into new brands, by sharing the cigars with them.  It is also just a kind practice to share, especially someone like me who has access to so many cigars.  So, for 2020, let’s all try to be a bit more generous with our smokes.
