The Pepperbox Cigar: What to smoke next?

June 10, 2022

Crafted by the famous Plasencia family exclusively for JR Cigars, the Pepperbox is a unique cigar unlike any other. What sets these gems apart is that there are actually four small cigars square-pressed together inside a single wrapper leaf, resembling the eponymous gun model that hosts three or more barrels. When you look at the foot of the Pepperbox cigar, it will look almost exactly like those old-school pistols!

The small 4.25×32 square pressed cigars are made with a core of aged Honduran and Mexican long-fillers and held together by an undisclosed binder. Keeping the four individual sticks together is a top-quality Nicaraguan Habano wrapper with a reddish-brown shade and an oily sheen.

To enjoy the Pepperbox, you can smoke it two ways. You can remove the wrapper and smoke the four cigars individually, or if you are daring, smoke the whole thing all at once! You can expect a rich medium-full bodied smoke that starts with a hefty dose of white and red pepper, quickly followed by a complex smattering of espresso, nuts, cinnamon, and tobacco sweetness.

Further, into the smoke, the pepper finds an incredible balance in the profile as cream and hints of citrus begin to muscle their way in and the smoke is incredibly smooth yet remains flavorful. Notes of milk chocolate also enter the mix, making for a complex smoke from beginning to end.

While the novel Pepperbox was fun while it lasted, all good things eventually come to an end. Although there are still a few Pepperbox cigars available for you to snag for your humidor, they’re gone for good once they are sold out.

But we would never leave you hanging, so we came up with some suggestions for you to try once you have thoroughly enjoyed all your Pepperboxes!

Plasencia Alma Del Fuego

If you want to keep it in the family, Plasencia’s Alma Del Fuego line will give you a comparable smoking experience to the Pepperbox with the use of their top-shelf Nicaraguan tobaccos. Underneath a reddish-brown wrapper from Jalapa are fillers predominantly from the Nicaraguan island of Ometepe, renowned for its incredibly fertile volcanic soils.

Named for their boldness and strength, you can expect Alma Del Fuego to provide a similar flavor profile to the Pepperbox, brimming with complex medium-full bodied notes of peppery spice, leather, espresso, and tobacco sweetness. If you have yet to try one of these top-shelf smokes, you are missing out!

Trinidad Espiritu

Another suggestion for you as an alternative to Pepperbox is Trinidad Espiritu cigars, which celebrate the Caribbean and Central American tobaccos, much like the tobaccos featured in the Pepperbox. Focusing on Nicaragua, Trinidad Espiritu is a Nicaraguan puro crafted with top-quality leaf specifically selected to resemble the cigars of the 60s and 70s.

You can expect a rich and complex full-bodied smoke brimming with pepper, toast, wood, tobacco sweetness, and espresso flavors along with hints of citrus zest. Much like how Pepperbox captures the feel of a rustic, old-timey pistol, Trinidad Espiritu harkens back to a bygone era of the fledgling non-Cuban cigar industry.
