Kentucky Fire Cured Swamp Thang Toro Cigar Review

The Kentucky Fire Cured line from Drew Estate is an exceptionally unique line of handmade premium cigars that push the boundaries of conventional blending in a manner that’s become familiar with many Drew Estate offerings. So, for this review, I decided to smoke the Kentucky Fire Cured Swamp Thang Toro, rolled in a beefy and popular 6 x54 size.

The Blend

Kentucky Fire Cured Swamp Thang cigars from Drew Estate are the first line of premium cigars to pair fire-cured tobaccos with a lush, green candela wrapper. They even go one step further by adding a natural shade leaf wrapper from the cap to the band that has been barrel-fermented and fire-cured.

Like many other Drew Estate offerings, Swamp Thang is rolled with a manufacturer’s secret blend of tobaccos, but I’ll take an educated guess and say that many of these tobaccos were grown on the modern La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate factory in Nicaragua. Once again, don’t hold me to this assumption.

Pre-Light

On my initial inspection, Swamp Thang Toro was solidly packed. The unnamed deep brown wrapper had tight seams and a nice oily sheen. The pre-light nose had an aroma of barnyard hay mixed with sweet perfume. The cold draw displayed these same nuances.

First Third

Unlike many other premium cigars that I’ve smoked in the past, this stick forgoes the bold peppery kick that starts thing off, instead, the first few inches had flavors of smoky vanilla and some woodsy components. A few more inches in, the pepper appears, but  takes a back seat to unique tasting notes of BBQ smokiness backed by lemon citrus and earth.

Second Third

Good things really start to happen in round two, for it becomes a highly complex smoke with rich flavors of hickory, pineapple, molasses, caramel, chocolate, and some sweet and smoky BBQ tones. Up to this point, Swamp Thang is burning like a champ with only a couple of minor touch-ups required from my trust Xikar triple torch lighter. Pardon the shameless plug!

Last Third

Hickory, pineapple, molasses, BBQ,  caramel, and chocolate, oh my… round three provided a distinctly delicious smoking experience that simply screams Drew Estate! The burn remained slow and even right down to the nub, and as billed, this is a solid medium-bodied smoke. The cigar ends with plenty of creaminess and has displayed a luring sweet tobacco aroma throughout.

Final Thoughts

  • Featured in no-frills bundles of 10, the modestly priced Swamp Thang Toro could easily be mistaken for a value-priced offering, but it’s a high-end premium cigar through and through.

  • The flavor profile may not be for everyone, but the more adventurous smoker will simply love this tasty one-of-a-kind blend.

  • The rich medium-bodied strength profile makes it a cigar that can be enjoyed by both the novice, and well-experienced smoker alike.

  • If you’re a fan of Drew Estate cigars, then, Swamp Thang Toro is a premium pleasure that you simply must try!
