Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa Cigar Review

Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa

Cavalier Cigars and their main manufacturer Sebastian Decoppet are on the up and up within the industry. The swiss based company “Cavalier Geneve” was founded in 2015, while its sister company based in the United States was founded three years later in 2018.

Decoppet primarily produces his cigars in Honduras at the Fabrica Centroamericana de Tabaco factory in Danli, Honduras. One cigar he produces that we cannot get enough of is the Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa. Since its release in June of 2021, I’ve had the good fortune of smoking two of these before we received the full box from our warehouse.

Eager to smoke another, I decided to smoke the 5 x 54 Robousto Gordo for this review. I previously smoked the 5 x 50 Robusto and the 6 x 60 Toro Gordo. With smoking two out of the five sizes available, I was ready to try this scrumptious cigar in my favorite cigar ring gauge.  Going into this review I had to put all bias aside. This specific smoke has been one of my go-to smokes in this short-lived year.

I’m excited to share my thoughts and feelings with you all because, in my humble opinion, this cigar is a few reviews away from being the “it” cigar everyone needs to have in 2022. So let’s dive in and enjoy another gem by Sebastian Decoppet

Cold Draw Impressions

Using my trusty straight-cut cigar cutter, I snipped the cap off just enough to do my cold draw test. Two prominent flavors I detected on my cold draw test were black pepper and cocoa. The previous two times I smoked this cigar I didn’t do a cold draw test but I very much so got a mouthful of black pepper.

Excited to smoke this for the third time, I used my single flame lighter from Xikar, toasted this bad boy up, and enjoyed this Robusto Gordo for an hour and ten minutes.

First third Impressions

Much like the other two sizes, I smoked before this one, the black pepper flavor note remained present throughout the entire smoke. The cocoa note I pinpointed in the cold draw remained present as well but took a back seat to the other notes I would detect in all three-thirds of the smoke.

Fresh cut grass came to me as I was 15 minutes in. I never thought I’d say this on paper or out loud, but I never thought a flavor note such as fresh-cut grass is something I’d be happy to detect while smoking a cigar. It’s like a breath of fresh air that mixes so well with cocoa and black pepper.

Second & Final Third Impressions

When I arrived at the second third, fresh-cut grass, cocoa, and black pepper were working their magic. An extra addition that came to me about a half-hour in was a note of leather. I credit this mixture of unique flavors I was tasting to the Viso Jalapa wrapper.

Once I entered the final third, no new flavor notes came to the forefront. Everything I was experiencing in the second third transitioned seamlessly to the final third for me.

One thing I noticed this time around was that the full-body experience of this smoke hit me harder and stronger in the final third than it did with the other two smokes I enjoyed.

It could have been the fact I was outside smoking this one and my pairing option added to it. But this Nicaraguan puro really did its job as a full-bodied smoke to the point where I had to take a break from smoking it for about 10 minutes right before I entered the final third.

Pairing Options

I’m not a connoisseur of wine by any means. But from time to time, I enjoy a nice glass of red wine. So, as I was smoking this gem outside in the brisk weather, I needed something that was going to keep me warm.

I cracked open a bottle of J. Lohr and had two glasses of wine alongside the Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa. The fruitiness of the wine complimented the black pepper and cocoa notes that were oozing out of this gem.

I’d recommend any red wine from J. Lohr or your favorite red wine sangria as a go-to pairing for this delectable smoke from Honduras.

Final Thoughts

Available in five different sizes, a box of 20 is going to cost you anywhere between $150-$170. As stated in a previous article of mine, if a box of 20 ranges from $150-$$230, that’s a bargain you won’t get anywhere else.

The MSRP of the Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa ranges anywhere from $7.50 to $8.50. For an up-and-coming cigar company and brand that produces bangers, this could be the steal of the decade.

I’m not one to tell you how to spend your money. But if you’re a seasoned cigar smoker out there who also happens to love Nicaraguan puros, then the Cavalier BII Viso Jalapa absolutely deserves a spot in your humidor today.

Enjoy and until next time!
