Perfect Example

December 31, 2014

Vega Fina is a brand made in the huge Altadis USA factory in the Dominican Republic. The brand was one made primarily for the Spanish and Western European market.  Now Spain is one of Cuba’s largest customers and Cuban cigars are everywhere.  Altadis (the parent of Altadis USA) is part owner of Habanos, the marketer of Cuban cigars worldwide.  Yet even with the company’s interest in selling Cuban cigars, it brought Vega Fina to Spain around 2000 and it became a huge seller.  In fact, it was the number one non-Cuban cigar in Spain.  In fact, at times its sales surpassed the beloved Cubans.  So here is a country where Cuban cigars are commonplace, yet the Vega Fina goes head to head with them and succeeds.  The Vega Fina came into the U.S. about 7 years ago.  It is a medium bodied, creamy cigar with nice complexity and a good price—about $5-6. The Vega Fina Forteleza 2 added a nice San Andres wrapper to the Dominican fillers and binder for a little more body.  But knowing U.S. tastes change, now Altadis USA is adding to the successful Vega Fina line with the new Vega Fina Nicaraguan.  Made in Honduras, the Vega Fina Nicaragua uses a Habano 2000 wrapper grown in Jalapa, Nicaragua over a Nicaraguan Jalapa Seco binder and Nicaraguan ligero and seco from Jalapa and viso from Esteli.  The result is more flavor and strength. It should be showing up any day.

But it may be next year (like next week)….and as they say in Hawaii—Hau’oli Makahiki Hou…or Happy New Year. Hope your 2015 is great!
